LOS ANGELES – The Golden Eagles concluded their participation in Dixie State's tournament in St. George, Utah going 2-1 over three games. On Friday, February 9, Cal State L.A. played two games against separate RMAC foes, Mesa State and New Mexico Highlands. Their final game of the tournament was played on Saturday against Colorado State-Pueblo. The Golden Eagles now stand at 6-1-1.
Mesa State 18, Cal State L.A. 8 – 7 inn.
In their first game on Friday, the Golden Eagles, playing as the home team in the neutral site affair, tasted defeat for the first time in the young 2007 season, falling to Mesa State, 18-8. In the third inning,
Mike Diaz hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot scoring
Kurt Crowell.
Tommy Horning would duplicate Diaz' feat, driving in
Kyle Williams on a two-run round tripper of his own in the bottom of the sixth.
Hector Molina surrendered seven runs, six earned, in only three innings of work in the abbreviated seven-inning tilt and picked up the loss.
Travis Scott, in 2.1 innings, gave up eight runs on nine hits.
Cal State L.A. 7, New Mexico Highland 4
The Golden Eagles' second game on Friday pitted them against New Mexico Highlands. In this neutral site contest, Cal State L.A. played as the visiting team.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early as starter
Isaac Morales gave up two runs to NMH in the bottom of the first. Cal State L.A. pulled ahead in their half of the fourth. With
Jeff Carroll on first,
Jack Roche knocked a two-run shot to left.
With two outs and the base loaded in the seventh, Roche doubled down the right filed line scoring Carroll, Crowell, and Klein. Roche was tagged out trying to stretch his double into a triple, ending the Golden Eagles' offensive output for the afternoon. That was all Cal State L.A. needed as they brought a 7-3 lead into the ninth.
John Mitchell, now in his fourth inning on the mound, gave up a run but still picked up the save, his first of the season. Morales, who pitched the first five innings, picked up the win.
Cal State L.A. 10, Colorado State-Pueblo 9
Jeff Carroll hit two homers, including the game-tying shot in the bottom of the ninth, as the Golden Eagles defeated Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon, the Cal State L.A.'s final tournament game in St. George, Utah.
The Golden Eagles put up three runs in their half of the third, taking a 3-2 lead. They would go on to pad their lead, scoring at least one run in each of the next four innings.
Up 8-6 heading into the final frame, Golden Eagle closer
Arturo Reyes entered the game and gave up three runs, blowing his first save opportunity this season. Now down 9-8, Cal State L.A. sent Carroll, who had already homered earlier in the contest, up to the plate. Carroll added his second homer, and team-leading fourth of the season, to tie the game up, 9-9.
Ivan Tapia flied out to left and Horning grounded out to second. Down to their last out,
Henry Contreras walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Brian Hernandez, pinch hitting for
Felipe Gallo, singled Contreras home and picked up the game-winning RBI.
The Golden Eagles' ninth inning heroics earned Reyes the win, his first of the season.
Cal State L.A. returns to Reeder Field on Friday, February 16, for a single game against Cal State San Marcos. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
